Hour of Penitence
Producer: Mood Pictures
Homes of the Order of Magdalene were founded during the 19th Century in Ireland, and were named after the Biblical prostitute who repented her sins. Such institutes became home to women who were rejected by society. Often, the only “sin” these women committed was that the people around them believed they were exposed to moral threats.
The sisters maintained rule with a rod of iron, mistreating the unfortunate women not only physically, but often psychologically as well. The residents were deprived of all their rights, possessions and even their names, apart from being locked up. The last asylum was closed as recently as 1996.
